Regarding: Mr Ang speech

1. It gives me great pleasure to be here today for my first Prefects’
Investiture in North View Secondary School.
2. The investiture is an important event on the Prefects’ calendar. It
is both an event to formally give recognition to their authority to lead and
also an occasion for them to renew their promise to serve.
3. I would like to thank parents, guardians as well as friends from
other schools for joining us on this investiture.
2
4. On this special occasion, I would like to share with them my
thoughts about their roles and responsibilities and our expectations for
Prefects.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PREFECTS
5. The selection of Prefects for the school is a stringent process and
is aligned to our motto – A Vision to Serve. Prefects are not servants
per se. They serve by transmitting school values and role modeling
good habits and behaviour for the general student population. Hence,
the job of a prefect is not an easy one. But rest assured that the school
will be behind you as you discharge your duties, to help you to grow to
be a leader.
6. We expect our Prefects to understand and exhibit our school
values which are encapsulated in the acronym PRIDE:
P – Perseverance
R – Respect
I – Integrity
D – Discipline
E – Excellence
3
7. The job of assisting in maintaining and continuing to maintain a
good state of discipline is not an easy one. But I hope the school values
will serve as your anchor and remind you that you need to Persevere.
Pressing on in the most difficult of times.
8. Show respect to staff and fellow school mates. Being a leader
means you will be humble to respect others and in turn win their respect
too. That way, you command the necessary respect to get your job
done.
9. As a leader, Integrity is paramount. It is alright to make mistakes
and we are human. What is important is that we are honest and has the
integrity to own up and learn from our mistakes. We also need to uphold
integrity which is the keystone of good character. I beseech all of you to
actively uphold this value, whether you are a prefect or not. For without
integrity, no one can be trusted and the social fabric will fall apart.
4
10. While continuing to maintain the standard of good discipline in our
school, we want our Prefects to reflect and uphold a higher sense of selfdiscipline.
When we are self-disciplined, it will be evident in the way we
behave. We will almost automatically know what is the acceptable
standard of behaviour and will not compromise our integrity to get things
done. Remember, you are not to do what is popular, but to do what is
right. You don’t have to please your friends as you execute your duties,
but to uphold fairness in executing your duties.
11. We expect nothing less than Excellence as you carry our your
work – Excellence as a student and a leader. More important, that you
can role-model for all the students so that they know what is acceptable
and good behaviour inside and outside of the school. Excellence is a
positive habit of the mind and I believe that through constant practice,
you can achieve it. So, press on!
12. I urge all Prefects and North View pupils to continue to embrace
our school values and put them into action.
5
EXPECTATIONS OF PREFECTS
13. As a school, we expect our Prefects to be positive role models and
to be the best of the best in behaviour.
14. For me, I only have one. I would like everyone of you to grow in
character and enjoy the journey of a leader. For Spiderman’s uncle
reminded us that “With great power comes great responsibilities”. I am
sure many of you receiving your appointments today understands this
and will live up to and perform beyond our expectations.
CONCLUSION
15. I wish all prefects a wonderful experience learning and serving as
a leader.
16. Thank you and good day.
